Visual Embryo Project - Visualization
The Visible Embryo
Visualization
3D Visualization Tool
Software tools were developed to allow the interactive 3D
visulization of the embryo reconstruction in real time. One of the
tools was exhibited in SIGGRAPH 92 in Chicago. This application
maintained the quick reponse needed for effective real-time
interaction by distributing the computational load between a
SiliconGraphics machine and a Convex supercomputer.
A very portable tool for viewing arbitrary oblique slices through
such data was also developed. This program allows interactive
display of orthogonal and oblique slices throught volumemetric
data without using any machine-specific functions. The application
was written in pure ANSI-standard C and uses X Window and
Motif Toolkit for its interface. It has been successfully tested on
workstations from Silicon Graphics, Sun and IBM.
The X Window application is now enhanced to visualize the volume
data in stereo on a SiliconGraphics workstation equiped with the
StereoGraphics stereo system.

planes.
Virtual Reality
The surface-based embryo-model described above was also
implemented within a virtual-reality environment, called the
CAVE at the SIGGRAPH 92 conference. One could walk around
the data, slice through it, and receive the sensation that one was actually in the
computer graphic environment. This system was also shown at
the Supercomputing 92 conference and the 1992 meeting of the
Radiological Society of North America.
